Rey Mysterio whose real name is Oscar Gutierrez is an American professional wrestler who was a three-time world champion holder at WWE.
He is presently signed to the independent circuit. Between the years 1995 to 2015, Rey Mysterio had a glorious wrestling career that spanned the Extreme Championship Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling and The WWE.
A lot of people regard Rey Mysterio as the greatest cruiserweight wrestler of all time.
During the during the mid 90’s, his flying Lucha Libra wrestling style was one of the major pioneers of the emergence of the cruiserweight wrestling in the United States.
Rey Mysterio has held a lot of wrestling championships throughout the course of his career and these include WWE’s World Heavyweight Championship, the WWE Championship, WCW/WWE Cruiserweight Championship, WCW World Tag Team Championship, WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship, WWC World Junior Heavyweight Championship, WWE Tag Team Championship, and WWE Intercontinental Championship.
He is a twenty-first WWE Triple Crown Champion, and in 2006 he won the fiercely contested WWE Royal Rumble.
Rey Mysterio’s Early Life and Childhood
Rey Mysterio was born on December 11 1974. Nothing much is known about his parents, but his uncle who was a Mexican wrestler under the name of Rey Misterio was the one who trained him and taught him the Lucha Libra flying form of wrestling.
This has grown to become Mysterio’s signature move in the wrestling world, popularized by him.
He made his wrestling debut in Mexico in 1989 while he was just fourteen year of age.
Rey Mysterio’s Wrestling Career
In 1995, he signed into Paul Heyman’s Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). He was there till the next year when he signed on to World Wrestling Championship and made his debut challenging Dean Malenko for his championship which Malenko would retain after the match.
In his next opportunity, on July 8 WCW Nitro, he defeated Malenko to win his first Cruiserweight Championship.
He held this title for three months until he lost it again to Malenko.
Mysterio was defeated in his title match against Laukea at SuperBrawl VII. He lost a rematch at Uncensored in March.
Mysterio then became involved in a feud with his close friend Eddie Guerrero who Mysterio would later defeat in a Title vs Mask Match at Halloween Havoc.
In November the same year, he lost the same title back to Guerrero. In a rematch at World War 3, Mysterio lost again.
In 1998 Mysterio won his third Cruiserweight Championship. He lost it later to Chris Jericho.
At that time, Rey Mysterio needed a knee operation that would keep him off for about six months.
After the match, Chris Jericho kept on hitting Mysterio with a toolbox and that storyline was used in covering up the knee surgery period of absence.
He would later return and collect the title again from Jericho after a match at Bash at the Beach.
That would be his fourth Cruiserweight Championship.
In 1999 he was nicknamed ‘The Giant Killer’ after winning matches against heavyweight wrestlers like Kevin Nash, Bam Bam Bigelow and Scott Norton.
On March 15 Nitro, he defeated Billy Kidman to collect his fifth Cruiserweight Championship.
Rey Mysterio got his first shot at the World Heavyweight Championship against Ric Flair, but the match ended in disqualification in Ric Flair’s favour.
The following week, Mysterio and Kidman teamed with each other and defeated Flair’s Four Horsemen stablemates Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko to win the WCW World Tag Team Championship.
This made Mysterio a double champion. He managed to defend his Cruiserweight Championship against his tag team partner Kidman at Spring Stampede before losing the title on the April 19 episode of Nitro to Psicosis.
In the following episode of Nitro, he won Psicosis to nab his fifth cruiserweight championship.
In the October 18 episode of Nitro, Mysterio and Konnan came together as a team and defeated Harlem Heat for the World Tag Team Championship.
Kidman and Mysterio participated in a Cruiserweight tag team tournament for the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship where they made it to the final round and ended up losing to Elix Skipper and Kid Romeo.
On the last episode of Nitro on March 26, they defeated Skipper and Romeo in a rematch to win the Cruiserweight Tag Team Titles before WCW was sold to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).
Rey Mysterio made his WWE debut in 2002 after a high profile promotion that prepared the fans of WWE for his coming.
McMahon insisted that he continued to use his mask and Rey Mysterio had to get a pass from the Lucha Libra commission to wear his mask again.
Mysterio’s first match was against Chavo Guerrero which he won, and then he started a feud with Kurt Angle that resulted into a match at SummerSlam which Kurt Angle won with an ankle lock submission.
He formed a tag team with Edge, and the two of them contested for the WWE Tag Team Championship against Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. They lost the match.
In a Smackdown episode in 2003, Mysterio defeated Tajiri and Jamie Noble in a Triple Threat match, and this earned him a shot at the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.
At WrestleMania XIX, he challenged the champion Matt Hardy for the title, but then he lost after Shannon Moore interfered during the match.
In a May episode of SmackDown, Mysterio defeated Shannon Moore and Crash Holly in a handicap elimination match, and he regained the number one contender status for the Cruiserweight title.
Mysterio then went on to defeat Hardy to win his first Cruiserweight Championship (this would be the first time he was going to win the title in WWE).
He participated at the survivor series in a four-way match for the Cruiserweight Title.
The match involved the champion Dudley, Chavo Guerrero, and Billy Kidman. Mysterio lost when Dudley pinned Guerrero to retain his title.
After unsuccessfully trying to regain his Cruiserweight title, Mysterio teamed up with Rob Van Dam, and they formed a tag team which would go on to win the Tag Team Championship.
The defended their title at Armageddon but later lost it when Rob Van Dam sustained an injury.
With Rob Van Dam down, Mysterio teamed up with Eddie Guerrero, and they took back the Tag Team Championship from the Basham Brothers.
When Eddie Guerrero, his longtime friend and later rival, was found dead in a hotel room, Rey Mysterio pulled off his mask on the stage to honour him.
Although he had his head bowed so no one could see his face.
He participated in a survivor series match where he was part of the Team Smackdown that defeated Team Raw in that match.
Mysterio started a feud with Big Show because he had eliminated the big man during the survivor series match.
They had a match that was popular tag ‘David vs Goliath,’ and Big Show won the match because Big Show’s tag team partner came around to help him out.
Rey Mysterio found a tag team partner in Batista. They faced Raw’s tag team champions, Big Show and Kane.
The latter won the match when Kane choke-slammed Mysterio.
In 2006 Mysterio set a Royal Rumble record of 62 minutes when he last eliminated Randy Orton to remain as the last man standing.
He had been only the second entrant during the match. In a triple threat match between himself, Randy Orton and then-champion Kurt Angle, Mysterio came out victorious to emerge the champion.
On July 23 at The Great American Bash, Mysterio lost the World Heavyweight Championship to King Booker after Chavo Guerrero interfered during the match and hit Mysterio with a steel chair.
In 2010, Mysterio won a Battle Royal Match to take Undertaker’s place at a Fatal 4-way match.
After eliminating Kane, he went on to win the match for the second time. He lost his title when Kane attacked him after a game with Jack Swagger using the opportunity to have a quick match which the weak Mysterio lost.
Mysterio then had a match with Jack Swagger which placed him as a top contender for the title.
Kane defeated Mysterio at Summerslam and hold on to the title.
On April 26, 2012, WWE reported that Mysterio had been suspended for 60 days due to his second violation of the company’s Talent Wellness Program policy and that his suspension would expire on June 25.
During a hiatus in 2015, Mysterio wanted to leave WWE but unknown to him the company had extended his contract without his knowledge.
He didn’t return but appeared in a video message at AAA’s Triplemanía XXII. WWE later confirmed that the thirty-year contact with the star had expired.
Days after his release from WWE, it was announced that Rey Mysterio had re-signed with AAA, for the first time since 1995.
In Triplemanía XXIII, the biggest show of the year at AAA, a match between Mysterio and Myzteziz was announced.
Both wrestlers teamed during their time in WWE and AAA but had never competed for a one-on-one against each other.
On August 9 at Triplemanía XXIII Mysterio was victorious. He left AAA due to financial disagreements.
In January 2018, Mysterio returned to WWE for a one time match at the Royal Rumble.
He returned again to compete in the 50-man Greatest Royal Rumble match. Currently, he wrestles at New Japan Pro-Wrestling in Osaka.
Rey Mysterio’s Music and Movies Career
Rey Mysterio has appeared in a movie in 2000 title Ready To Rumble. He shared the spotlight with other wrestlers.
Due to his love for music, Mysterio has performed with rappers like Mad One, and they both released a track “Booyaka 619” which he used as his theme song for some time in 2005.
He was also on the WWE Originals album where he performed a song titled “Crossing Borders.”
Rey Mysterio’s Family and Personal Life
Mysterio and his wife Angie have two children: one son, Dominic, was born in 1997 and a daughter, Aaliyah, who was born in 2001.
He has tattoos of his children’s names on his right and left biceps, and also had tattoos dedicated to his wife, Angie, and a tattoo with the initials EG for his best friend and fellow wrestler, Eddie Guerrero.
He is a Roman Catholic, and he crosses himself before every match. His body bears numerous religious tattoos, most notably a cross on his chest.
