Her father is Boris Sagal, a Jewish-Ukranian who worked as a director before dying in a fatal helicopter accident on the set of the miniseries “world war III” in 1981.

Her mother, Sarah Zwilling was a singer who performed with the stage name “Sara Macon.” She was also a producer and television writer. She died from complications resulting from heart disease in 1975.

After the death of her mother, her father got married to the dancer and actress Marge Champion in 1977.

Of her four siblings, three are actors; these include her younger twin sisters Jean Sagal and Liz Sagal and her brother Joe Sagal.

Her other brother David Sagal is an attorney. He is married to actress, McNally Sagal. Her godfather, Roman Lear is a prominent sitcom producer and writer.

Katey Sagal attended the California Institute of the Arts where she studied singing and acting.

She began her acting career appearing in several made-for-TV movies between 1971 and 1975.

In “Candidate for Crime” which was directed by her father, she appeared as a receptionist.

Her first major movie role came as a newspaper columnist in the series “Mary” which aired from 1985-1986 and featured Mary Tyler Moore.

She went on to be cast as Peggy Bundy in “Married…with Children” (1987 – 1997).

She played the role of a lower class, sex-starved, lazy and free-spending wife of a shoe salesman Al Bundy.

She came to audition for the part with her red bouffant wig which with the approval of the producers was adopted and used in the show. The series lasted for eleven years.

She featured in several more television films, and guest starred in the children’s cartoon “Recess” as the voice of Spinelli’s mother.

In 1998 she was chosen to provide the voice character for the purple head mutant spaceship captain Leela in the hit science fiction movie “Futurama.” The series had massive success and tons of fans but was canceled after its fourth season.

However due to its popularity and use on most comedy shows, comedy central commissioned a season of Futurama direct-to-DVD films.

This was later re-transmitted as a 16 episode fifth season. Katey maintained her role as Leela in the season, and also the sixth season that began airing in June 2010. The series came to a final halt in 2013.
