The group was formed in 1975 after the founding member, Steve Harris left his former group called, Smiler.

Harris has since stated that the name iron Maiden was inspired by the classical film adaption titled ‘The Man in the Iron Mask’ from a best seller novel by Alexandre Dumas.

Harris gathered his friends who were equally skilled in music and they began to rehearse.

After months of rehearsal, they made their debut at St. Nicks Hall in Poplar on May 1, 1976.

Shortly after their debut performance, they rented a semi-residency at the Cart and Horses Pub in Maryland Point, Stratford.

They did this having noticed the possibility of becoming a great band.

Iron Maiden’s Story

The Original members of the band include – Harris, a songwriter, Paul Day, a vocalist, Dave Sullivan and Terry Rance both guitarists, and Ron Matthews who is a drummer.

The Original Line Up was short-lived, and began to undergo changes when Paul Day was axed from the group.

The reason was traced to his seemingly lack of energy and charisma onstage.

Paul Day was quickly replaced by Dennis Wilcock, a Kiss fan who soon attracted attention and won the hearts of fans for his theatrics of using make-up and fake blood during live performances.

Shortly after Wilcock’s addition to the group, his friend, a guitarist was invited to join the group.

This was a move which the band’s existing guitarists, Dave Sullivan and Terry Rance frowned at.

Their anger prompted the band’s leader, Harris to temporarily disband the group in 1976 although they soon regrouped with Marray as the only guitarist.

Till date, Harris and Murray are the Iron Maiden’s longest serving members and have made input in all the group’s songs.
